Episode 179: Guardians of the Galaxy

This week marks our 4th anniversary with Comic Book Informer. We released our first episode on August 4th, 2010. It’s been a fun ride, and there’s no better way to enjoy this anniversary than by shocking Vince again and again. On this episode, we talked about Guardians of the Galaxy. A lot. Episode 266: Angel of Death

This week, Vince and I tackle some early X-Factor issues; those revolving around Apocalypse’s introduction, as well as Angel’s traumatic transformation to his Fourth Horseman. X-Men: Apocalypse did a terrible job with this profound event, and if you get a chance, we suggest you check out Louise Simonson’s story-arc in those X-Factor issues. Episode 262: Meh Comic Book Day

So this week was Free Comic Book Day. Who knew? This was one of the least advertised FCBDs of recent years, and it may be because there really wasn’t all that much to take in. With the exception of a couple good stories, most offerings weren’t up to par, in our opinion. As for What We’re Reading, we covered the new Thunderbolts, Nova, Punisher and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is ramping up toward its season finale. Episode 253: Should we care that Spidey’s black?

This week, Vince decided we should talk about a couple new issues which caused some stir on the internets. Black Widow’s reboot was something that I had been dreading, simply because I’d been so enamoured with the last series. Sadly, while this first issue was impressive in some regards, I simply found it didn’t have enough story to warrant the cover price… great art or not. And then there was Spider-Man #2, which attempted to stir up crap, by having the writer use the main character’s voice to say that race doesn’t matter. A nice sentiment, certainly; however the fact is, it does. We are fighting to be more inclusive with our super-heroes, which means race does matter. Gender matters. Sexual orientation matters. Religion matters. Disabilities and mental health matters. We want more variety in our comics, more diversity, and more representation. So don’t tell us it doesn’t matter if Spidey’s black or not.
