This week, Vince and I tackle the Gauntlet, a very trying period in Mr. Peter Parker’s life. During these issues, Parker had to deal with his most iconic foes, including his most fearsome: Anti-May (you think I’m joking, but I’m not… May was straight-up scary as hell in some of these issues).
It was also during this time that Parker finally got the stones to ask Detective Carlie out; dealt with his in-costume, sexy-time romance with Black Cat; and fended off Norah’s advances. It was also during the Shed story-arc that the Lizard killed Dr. Connors’ son. Iconic moments in Spider-Man’s history, all well worth reading.
Well, except for the Electro and Vulture story-arcs… you can skip those, to be honest.
Enjoy.

Amazing Spider-Man #625 is actually THE issue that got me reading Marvel comics again. I was more of a DC guy at the time, and picked up this issue solely on the strength of that cover, with Rhino treating through it. I thought “Oh, hey, Spidey is fun. Rhino is a good villain. This should be a fun read!”
For me, that issue served well enough as a stand-alone issue, because it wasn’t until Grim Hunt was over that I finally went back and read all of the Gauntlet issues. #625 broke my heart, not when Oksana dies, but when Nora and Spider-Man are there as the two Rhinos face off. If I remember right, it’s from Nora’s point-of-view, where she is describing what happens. I was blown away, and started picking up regular ASM issues when I could afford them.
The other two stories were also fantastic, but damn, that Rhino issue.
That should say “tearing”, not “treating”. Whoops!
Yeah, the Rhino story-arc was absolutely fantastic. So much love for what they did with Rhino there.
