Episode 028: You Go Girl

This week, we tackled the new FF series, with everything that’s happened from issue 1 to the brand new 4. We’ve been enjoying it quite a bit, and the new interactions between Spider-Man and the remaining Fantastic Four members are proving to be a perfect blend of humor and action. We also discussed the Ultimate Death of Spider-Man as well as the Ultimate Avengers tie-in; both fun reads, though the length of this event is starting to cause it to lose steam… not to mention the knowledge of a replacement Spider-Man already planned. We also ranted about Alpha Flight, each for our own reasons. Vince hates that a brand new series requires a point one issue (and I agree). I just didn’t enjoy the issue at all. I also ranted about the way it has been handled in the past and what appears to be on the horizon for it now. For the record, when I said there isn’t a Canadian writer on it, I meant the current incarnation, not the original series… though truth be told, I didn’t know John Byrne had lived in Canada for a stint. A point of correction for Vince, Byrne was born in England and moved to Canada when he was 8. Does that make him any less Canadian? Naw…. I just like pointing out when Vince doesn’t have all of his facts right. The Walking Dead Issue 83

I cannot for the life of me think of a single other comic book series that has gripped me so entirely. Robert Kirkman has created a world where characters introduced a mere five issues prior can become integral to plot points… characters whom you suddenly find yourself caring for very deeply. Issue 83 of The Walking Dead, titled “No Way Out, Part Four“, contains the most dramatic moment in the entire series. This is saying a lot, and anyone who has read all prior 82 issues without having gotten to 83 should take a moment and think about the weight of that statement. Remember the death of Shane and Lori. Picture Rick’s hand coming off. Think of Dale being cannibalized. The list goes on and on. More has happened in 83 issues than has occurred in popular long-running series. However nothing like this. I’d have thought something like this would have been saved for an anniversary issue (say, 100), however nope… there it is for you to stumble upon, and if you’re anything like me, your heart will have skipped a beat at what is now the most gripping single pannel in the entire series. As it is impossible to say much about this issue without spoiling it for others, the remainder of the review will continue below. Comic of the Week (3/30/11) – The Walking Dead #83

The Walking Dead has been on a major roll with the “No Way Out” storyline. The peaceful life Rick and the rest were building for themselves came to a crashing end when a horde of zombies breached the walls. Last issue, Rick swore to get Carl and the rest of his loved ones out of danger, no matter the cost. This month, plans go awry and the body count rises.
